MIRSCHEL PARK improvements and community recreation center

Mirschel Park Improvements rendering
Laberge Group was retained by the Village of Hempstead to develop designs and provide construction services for a transformative initiative aimed at revitalizing 90 Atlantic Avenue, the only accessible public recreational space in this high-density, low-income community. The project includes the construction of a new community center and significant park improvements to enhance safety, recreation, accessibility, and community engagement. The Mirschel Park project scope included the design, site preparation, permitting requirements, construction documents, project manual, and bidding assistance for all building and site related elements. The community was included in the planning process, including neighborhood children who provided their own renderings in pencil and crayon. Park improvements optimizing the park layout, durability and playability feature new or improved recreation areas with community safety enhancements including:

Mirschel Park Community Recreation Building:

A new two-story activity space including a 60×80 multi-purpose gymnasium, fitness and weight training equipment, walking track, lounge areas, locker and changing/restrooms, multi-purpose community room, senior center, demonstration kitchen with pantry, 4 flexible classrooms, computer lab, conference room, outdoor terrace, and a 400sf open outdoor covered pavilion. The building will feature a solar photovoltaic power generation system.

Mirschel Park Outdoor Park Improvements:

Canopy structures for shade seating and year-round park use, basketball and pickle-ball courts, splash pad, paved walkways and gathering spaces, benches, tables, bike racks, waste receptacles, playground enhancements, trees, green spaces, modernized lighting, drainage, and water supply systems.

The Mirschel Park Community Recreation Center and outdoor park improvements will assist the Village and other non-profits in creating a safe space to provide programs that positively engage people of all ages, particularly participation of more children in after-school and summer enrichment programs within walking distance of their homes. As this is the only public recreational open space in this majority low-income area of the Village, these improvements will significantly enhance the quality of life for this community.
