SALT SHED BUILDING ENGINEERING & GRANT ADMINISTRATION

The Town of Schuyler Falls contracted Laberge Group to assist in securing funding, design the Salt Storage Facility, prepare the bid and permitting documents, oversee selecting a general contractor, and for project oversight and reporting.

Laberge Group also assisted in applying for and securing $600,000 through the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Water Quality Improvement Project (WQIP) Consolidated Funding Application (CFA) for the construction of the new Salt Storage Facility.

The Town’s prior salt pile was uncovered and continually exposed to the extreme Upstate NY weather, resulting in significant water quality impacts from salt runoff. Storm surge events, which have been occurring more frequently in recent years, were increasing the risk of further contamination to the regional water supply. This continual environmental exposure posed a pressing concern for the numerous sensitive Adirondack waterbodies in close proximity to the salt storage location including the Salmon River – a major tributary of Lake Champlain, as well as private wells used by local residents who rely on wells as their source of drinking water.

The Town will construct a salt/sand storage facility on their existing Highway Department in order to provide better accessibility, ensure the salt is covered and protected from the elements year-round, and alleviate health and environmental concerns for local waterbodies and drinking wells.
