Accessory Dwellings Units as Affordable Housing
With increasing housing affordability issues in New York, communities must now utilize more creative strategies to tackle the problem. One promising approach is the use of Accessory Dwelling Units or ADUs.
ADUs, sometimes referred to as “In-Law Apartments,” can provide more flexibility for property owners to construct a second living unit within an existing dwelling, an accessory structure or as a standalone dwelling unit. However, there are numerous issues communities must take into consideration and sometimes, well-meaning regulations can add unnecessary barriers to ADUs as well as result in unanticipated impacts to surrounding neighborhoods.
This seminar will:
- Review various types of ADUs – addressing the pros and cons of each.
- Discuss how they may help provide more affordable housing.
- Deliver insights into alternative regulatory strategies, relevant building code requirements, and an overview of potential NYS ADU legislation.
- Provide strategies for crafting workable regulations for your community.
