Rensselaer County and the Town of Schodack, NY completed a large two-year water infrastructure extension project along Route 9 South. Public officials and residents attended an opening ceremony on June 16th, 2025 at Sampson’s Restaurant on Rte. 9, one of the businesses that will benefit from the waterline extension.

Laberge Group was retained by the Town for development of a map, plan and report; environmental reviews; surveying; final design; permit, bidding, contract administration services; and construction observation to extend municipal water services along five miles of Route 9 South. The project connects to the existing water main near the Amazon Distribution Center and extends services to the southern Town and County border. The water infrastructure extension began in October, 2023, with the first phase including the installation of approximately 26,500 linear feet of water main. The second phase of this project involves the construction of a 500,000 gallon water storage tank, along with approximately 4,400 linear feet of watermain connecting to Phase 1.

The extension improves public health and safety by providing individual homes and businesses that had been dependent on private water wells with access to safe, potable, and reliable municipal drinking water, and provides hydrant fire protection.

“This is historic and a transformational project for Rensselaer County and Schodack. Completion of this project gives the County a greater platform to attract new development and investment to an area of the County with an excellent workforce, proximity to major metropolitan areas and transportation routes and room to grow. We expect great things to happen on this section of US 9.” – Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin

Extending the municipal water service to this area is important as it will allow future business development along the busy corridor that already includes Amazon and Hannaford Distribution Centers. The Route 9 stretch is close to Interstate 90 ramps, and is centrally located within a reasonable driving distance from New York City; Boston, MA; Rochester; Syracuse and neighboring northeast states.

$10,050,000 in Rensselaer County American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding was committed to support the design and implementation of this important water distribution system project via an Inter Municipal Agreement (IMA) between Rensselaer County and the Town of Schodack.

“This is a massive investment in Schodack and we thank the county for their partnership and their faith in our town. The new water line will improvement our economic development efforts here but also help to give residents clean drinking water and provide adequate supplies for our fire companies.”
