New Paltz Consolidation Agreement

This website is designed to keep the community updated and engaged with the ongoing consolidation agreement draft and potential referendum for the Town and Village of New Paltz.

Background

In 2025, the New Paltz Village Board resolved to explore the option of dissolution of the Village government, which would result in absorption of governance and services by the Town of New Paltz. The Village received a New York State Citizen Reorganization Grant (CREG) to fund the development of a Dissolution Plan.

In a joint resolution on January 28, 2026, the New Paltz Town and Village Boards determined it appropriate to develop a Joint Consolidation Agreement Document to assist in understanding the effects and logistics of consolidation, and potential referendum.

Why Develop a Consolidation Agreement?

Pursuant to General Municipal Law Article 17-A, the Town and Village of New Paltz are authorized to undertake a joint board initiated process to explore consolidation of the Town of New Paltz and the Village of New Paltz. This includes development of a consolidation agreement to assist the citizens of the Town and Village of New Paltz in understanding the logistics and making an informed decision should the Village Board choose to move this forward to a referendum vote.
